i think that this picture is useful in how it shows how they had their own, alternative medical ideas of how to heal the sick. Also, it illustrates that they have an awareness of the environment of what plants help cure certain illnesses, as they used "a plant which the Brazilians call petum and the Spaniards tapaco" that they dried the leaves and used it to smoke on, (as seen in the picture) which apparently cured their various infections.
From this depiction of the natives, i feel it would also scare the settlers when they saw such acts taking place. It may come across as a devilish act and further fuel their notion of them being unhuman, savages.
